Extra Point: Johnson Makes #14 For Florida Gators

IMG_1283

The Florida Gator commitment train continued rolling on Monday afternoon as Dallas (TX) Skyline Athlete Kylan Johnson flipped his verbal pledge from Kansas State to Florida.

The three star athlete was offered on Friday, visited Florida over the weekend, and committed shortly after Montrell Custis, who also visited Florida this weekend, shunned the Gators for Ole Miss.

Johnson is a versatile player who could compete as a safety or possibly as an outside linebacker at Florida.

He’s another sleeper prospect brought in by former Arkansas linebacker’s coach Randy Shannon as the staff continues to expand their search for suitable recruits to fill in their 2015 recruiting class.

Johnson becomes the 14th commit for the Gators who are hoping to snag a few more before days end.

Swamp Rumors: Gators Pick Up Three, Three More Set To Decide

IMG_1376

The final weekend before national signing day was a busy one for the Florida Gators.

They picked up three commitments, two offensive lineman and a defensive lineman, and could possibly pick up as many as three more commitments today.

DE/OG Richerd Desir-Jones (6-4 285) from football powerhouse Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas was the first to commit after flipping from FIU.

The Gators are looking at him as an offensive lineman. He’s a thick bodied athletic recruit that the Gators think has a big upside.

Next to go was big Fred Johnson (6-7 300) from Royal Palm Academy in West Palm Beach (FL). He picked the Gators over Miami after visiting both schools the last couple of weeks.

He should anchor the Gators rebuilding efforts along the offensive line where the Gators return only eight scholarship lineman after being decimated by graduation and early draft entry.

Finally, on Sunday, defensive end Luke Ancrum (6-5 240) from Sebring (FL) committed on his official visit to Florida.

He’s another kid that the staff feels could be a steal. He’s got great length at 6-5 with a solid frame to add weight at the next level. He also has great quickness and athleticism and will be counted upon for his pass rushing skills.

Perhaps the biggest news story for the Gators over the weekend concerned a recruit not on a UF official visit.

Four star running back Jordan Scarlett (5-11 222) from Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas backed off of his verbal commitment to the hometown Miami Hurricanes while on an official visit to FSU Sunday morning.

Of course, while not unexpected, the timing of the decommitment led to widespread speculation that he would be flipping to the Seminoles. However, the Gators set themselves up really well in his recruitment jumping on board as soon as head coach Jim McElwain took over.

Meanwhile the Seminoles slow-played him waiting to see if there was going to be attrition from the three running backs previously committed to them. The attrition happened but likely too late to get the flip from Scarlett.

The Gators basically sold Jordan on the prospect for early playing time with only two backs returning as well as being the top guy on their running back board. After a great visit to Florida on the weekend of the 23rd, the Gators feel real good about getting his commitment.

He’s expected to announce Monday evening at 7 on eastern.

Two other recruits expected to announce today are Lilburn (GA) Parkview DE G.G. Robinson, a Louisville commit that the Gators are trying to flip and Gainesville (GA) Athlete Chris Williamson.

Robinson (6-4 260) visited Florida this past weekend along with Williamson and reportedly had a great time.

“I fell in love (with Florida),” Robinson was quoted in a 247sports story by Luke Stampini. “It was perfect. Everything in the Swamp. Basically, the Swamp … They just showed me a lot of love.”

He’s a versatile guy that the Gators are looking at as either a tight end or defensive end.

He now appears to be torn between Louisville and Florida, the only two remaining schools that he is considering.

Williamson (6-1 190) also reportedly had a great visit. He’s another versatile recruit that could play either receiver or cornerback. I believe they really like him on defense but he’ll likely get a look on both sides if he signs with the Gators.

Both recruits are good friends with Gator TE recruit Daniel Imatorbhebhe an early enrollee and all signs point to the Gators picking up both commitments this evening although Robinson is the less likely of the two.

Williamson is set to announce at 10 pm eastern Monday on FoxSportsSouth and his final schools are Florida, Cal, North Carolina, and Michigan.

Although Ryan Bartow of 247sports is reporting he’s actually down to two: Florida and Michigan.

Robinson is expected to announce around 9 pm est via Twitter.

The Monday Morning Quarterback: Florida Failures Fuel Rivals Success

by Eric P. Burdette

by Eric P. Burdette

As the Florida Gators limp into national signing day 2015 with perhaps their lowest rated class in over twenty years, The Monday Morning Quarterback believes the Gators impotent in-state recruiting over the last five to six years has fueled the success of their rivals, FSU in particular, and left the Gators as a mere after-thought among programs nationally.

It’s no secret that the state of Florida is one of the top division one (ahem, FBS) talent producing states in the country. Every major program as well as most minor programs maintain some level of recruiting presence in the state of Florida annually.

Howard Schnellenberger made it a point of emphasis when he took over a lowly Miami program in the late 1970’s to focus on locking down the surrounding counties of Broward, Dade, Palm Beach, etc… In order to build a championship team.

He did just that and took them to a national title within five years of taking over. That is the blueprint for success for state of Florida teams.

Bear Bryant once called Florida a “sleeping giant”, a team that would potentially be dangerous once they got a coach that could recruit the state of Florida properly.

Charlie Pell did just that when he took over the Gator program and it led to the Gators first SEC title (subsequently stripped but no less won on the field) and the talent he recruited was also responsible for the Gators first number one ranking.

The Big Three programs in the state of Florida, FSU, Miami, and the Gators historically have seen their football fortunes go up and down and The Monday Morning Quarterback believes that cycle is directly correlated with the Gators ability or inability to recruit the state of Florida.

When Bobby Bowden took the reins at FSU, the Gators were in a down cycle recruiting-wise under then head coach Doug Dickey. It allowed the “aww shucks” personality of Bowden to clean up in-state which got them into the Orange Bowl in consecutive years and top ten finishes in the national polls while the Gators were sinking to the depths of an 0-10-1 season in 1979.

When Pell took over before that winless season he began to out recruit Bowden for top in-state kids which led to the rise of the Gator program and a slight decline in the Seminole program.

After Pell was investigated for recruiting violations and the Gators were put on probation (back when NCAA sanctions still had teeth) it once again gave FSU a leg up on in-state recruiting and we saw a subsequent rise by the Seminoles and decline by the Gators.

The rare time when all of the Big Three were recruiting the state on all cylinders (much of the decade of the 90’s), all of the three were at or near the top of the polls. Those three getting all the top Florida prospects was holding off out of state programs from doing so and keeping them from being competitive with the Big Three.

The next decade and a half saw the rise of Miami (2000-04), the rise of the Gators (2005-2009), and the rise of the Seminoles (2010-2014).

The recruiting prowess of Davis at Miami, Ron Zook and Urban Meyer at Florida kept the Noles down for the first decade. Miami slid down post-Davis and Florida left a huge void when Urban Meyer stepped down, stepped back, then stepped down for good one year later.

This gave Jimbo Fisher the opportunity to clean up in-state and build a championship team much like Miami and Florida had earlier this millennium.

What does all this mean? It means Florida can’t afford anymore coaching misses.

While Will Muschamp had some success on the recruiting trail, clearly he was a step behind Fisher on evaluating talent, particularly Florida talent.

Another coaching change at Florida has not only been great for FSU recruiting, but it has certainly helped some out of state teams as well including Alabama and Auburn and surprisingly Ole Miss who have all been able to cherry pick top skill talent for several years. It’s why those teams were all top ten ranked teams last season and the Gators made a coaching change.

So it’s quite apparent to The Monday Morning Quarterback that it is imperative for the new staff to rebuild old in-state recruiting strongholds for the Gators particularly Tampa and Jacksonville as well as make serious inroads into the fertile south Florida areas surrounding Miami.

Without that, the Gators will remain irrelevant while allowing rivals in-state and out-of-state to flourish at the Gators expense.

The good news for Gator fans is that when McElwain took over he pointed out their first goal was to take back in-state recruiting and he hired staff with that goal in mind bringing in Randy Shannon who has deep ties to south Florida and Miami as well as Kirk Callahan who has deep ties to the Tampa area with his father, Sean, the longtime head coach of Armwood high in Seffner.

While this staff will be severely tested coaching up some young talent the previous staff failed at coaching, perhaps the old saying “it’s less about the x’s and the o’s and more about the Jimmys and the Joes” applies here.

Maybe the old staff didn’t fail so much on coaching but rather on talent evaluation.

The new staff can’t afford to do that. They get a pass on this class, but for certain they must out-recruit the other schools in-state and out-of-state starting immediately with the 2016 class if they hope to stem the tide of success for FSU, Alabama, etc… And finally get back on top themselves.

The old standard of 70-80% in-state recruits (top level) and cherry picking top skill talent from other states as needed (Percy Harvin/Jameis Winston once-in-a-lifetime types) should be applied. This means to quit wasting so much time recruiting Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina and focus on top in-state recruits primarily.

The Monday Morning Quarterback believes Bear Bryant was right. Florida is a sleeping giant. One that has been awoken only a few times but has three national championships to show for those awakenings.

It’s time to awaken that beast again and take back the state of Florida recruiting from rivals who have benefitted simply from Florida’s previous malfeasance on the state of Florida recruiting trail.

I’m The Monday Morning Quarterback, and I’m out!

Ancrum makes Lucky #13 For The Florida Gators

IMG_1283

The final recruiting weekend before national signing day has been good to the Gators.

Coming in they were hoping for 5-6 public commits, and now they’re halfway there thanks to defensive end Luke Ancrum (6-5 230) from Sebring (FL) who committed to the Gators during his official visit Sunday.

In an article by Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel, Luke’s high school coach Lavaar talked about what the Gators are getting with Ancrum.

“He’s just got a tremendous upside and that’s what they see in him,” Scott said. “Some people passed him up and I know he’ll make some people regret it in the end.”

Ancrum is an athletic pass rushing end whom the Gators offered just this past week. The Gators think they’ve got another steal with this kid.

He is commitment number thirteen for the Gators three days before signing day.

Extra Point: Jordan Scarlett Down To Two?

IMG_1370-0

In the fallout of the final weekend of recruiting visits before national signing day, four star running back Jordan Scarlett (5-11 222) from Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas backed off from his Miami Hurricanes pledge on Sunday morning.

It was not unexpected as many have predicted that Scarlett would not sign with Miami in the end despite his verbal commitment, and ultimately that played out with this morning’s announcement.

What was unexpected was the timing of the announcement, coming on the morning of the final day of his trip to Tallahassee. It has led to speculation that FSU may now be the favorite to nab his signature on signing day.

He has visited all three state schools, Miami on the 16th and Florida on the 23rd and said he would not make a decision until after all three visits.

Now it appears the hometown Hurricanes are the odd man out and he will choose between FSU and Florida on Monday.

The Gators, who are looking to take two backs in this class, hope they put themselves in a good position last week having his good friend Brandon Powell hosting him and selling him on the opportunity for early playing time.

Here’s what he told Gatorcountry’s Andrew Spivey after his visit to Florida:

“It was great man, I had a great time,” Scarlett said. “I got to hang out with some of the players that I already knew and some of the recruits that I have gotten to know. I had a great time. I got to hang out with Quincy [Wilson] and Brandon Powell. Those are good friends.”

Florida’s biggest selling point may very well be the two offensive minds that now lead the Gators offensive attack. Head coach Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, both former national championship winning offensive coordinators at Alabama, have a strong history of creating formidable rushing attacks and getting players drafted.

That appeals to him according to Zach Abolverdi of the Gainesville Sun.

“It’s attractive,” Scarlett said of playing for the two coaches. “That definitely was appealing. The type of backs they’ve used on their championship teams are similar to my style, so that’s a good thing for me.”

He added, “They’re telling me I’m the guy they want and I can come and change the program,” Scarlett said about the Gator staff’s selling points. “With the coaching staff being new, they want players like me to build the team around.”

Prior to this weekend’s visit many had him pegged to Florida if he flipped his commitment. And many still do.

Florida may have a secret weapon in their favor. His girlfriend reportedly attends UF.

The Seminoles for their part are looking for another back in this class after former commit Johnny Frasier flipped his commitment to N.C. State.

They have the stability of the coaching staff and a 29-1 record the last two seasons to sell.

They also have sophomore Dalvin Cook the entrenched starter returning as well as Ryan Green and Mario Pender, both former four star backs out of high school, and Jacquez Patrick coming in this cycle.

That makes for a crowded backfield for a guy that looks like a legitimate starter from day one.

The Gators, with only Kelvin Taylor and Adam Lane returning, could provide a quicker path to playing time.

Regardless, he is expected to make his decision on Monday.
