Gator Bits: Decision Day For Two Top Gator Targets

As August approaches and summer winds down, high school football recruiting remains in full gear.

A long summer of road trips, on-campus visits, and football camps leads to a rash of commitments as players seek to secure a spot in their favored schools class before their senior season begins.

Today two in-state recruits high on the Florida Gators board, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and athlete Devan Barrett, are set to reveal their college choices.

Unfortunately for fans and recruitniks, the Gators will likely be shut out today.

The big name on the board is Jerry Jeudy (6-1, 177), a speedy receiver from Pompano Beach (FL) who dominated the summer camp circuit with ankle-breaking jukes becoming an internet sensation in the process.

His recruitment has long been considered a Florida-Alabama battle with Bama in the lead. Miami, Tennessee, and FSU round out his top five.

After showing out at the Gators camp Friday Night Lights, he appeared to admit Florida and Alabama were his top two.

He later came out and recanted that.

So now he’s set to commit tonight at 8:30 pm est.

The Gators feel confident in their chances particularly with him deciding fresh off a sensational FNL visit but Bama appears just as confident as his long-time leader and some mutual connections with Tide star receiver Calvin Ridley. Not to mention they’re the big dog fresh off a national title.

Of course, we cannot rule out the other two in-state teams with FSU, the flavor of the moment in-state, loading up on another top recruiting class and Miami being close to home.

Personally, I believe the Gators have done a good job here getting a long look from him but ultimately the Tide is too tough to beat.

Of course, it’s a long way to signing day and you can bet that regardless of which school he picks today, his recruitment is far from over and will be a battle to the end.

Devan Barrett is a speedy athlete from Tampa who can play at a number of different positions. He plays running back in high school but some have him projected as a DB in college.

He has the Gators in his top 5 and will reveal his decision tonight at 6 pm est.

Barrett is a solid running back but with the Gators finished recruiting at the position for this cycle after the recent commitment of top target Adarius Lemons, expect Florida to be merely a hat on the table tonight.

Auburn is the team to beat here with their spread offense and a number of connections to current Tiger players.

Looks like the Gators will go 0-fer tonight but still should get some good publicity as they continue to build their brand under head coach Jim McElwain.
